Self in Need of Mending
Notice
by Steve Kowit
This evening, the sturdy Levis
I wore every day for over a year
& which seemed to the end in perfect condition,
suddenly tore.
How or why I don't know,
but there it was--a big rip at the crotch.
A month ago my friend Nick
walked off a racquetball court,
showered,
got into his street clothes,
& halfway home collapsed & died.
Take heed you who read this
& drop to your knees now & again
like the poet Christopher Smart
& kiss the earth & be joyful
& make much of your time
& be kindly to everyone,
even to those who do not deserve it.
For although you may not believe it will happen,
you too will one day be gone.
I, whose Levis ripped at the crotch
for no reason,
assure you that such is the case.
Pass it on.

Oh wow. I love the photos, especially the torn lace and your words here, I'm quieted. Lately I've been feeling mortality creeping into my thoughts and feelings and this post really spoke to me; especially the part of being kind to those that don't deserve it. I'm not good at that part, but plan to be better. Thank you.
gorgeous photos!
and by the way, how did you steal my outfit? :)
Great photos and a wonderful poem as a poignant reminder that life is short and fragile and we must make the most of every moment
hmmm. this really resoginates with me. I'm still internalizing the poem, so I don't have much to say.
well done. beautiful.
That's a great poem and I love your photos. What a cool take on today's SPC!
Hmmm-falling to our knees with gratitude. It has been a while........but I just now have....life really is a great and special gift. Living for the moment instead of for tomorrow or for the next is an important lesson I cherish and am working on practicing more.
Thank you for the reminder to fall to my knees today.
i am glad you passed this on to me. these are words i'll be coming back to.
thanks for stopping by my corner, i'm glad you did.
Wow, thank you.
I love the message in that poem.

The torn lace is my favorite!
love the torn lace photo, all the more beautiful because of the imperfection...
The photos are wonderful, such outstanding color and clarity. And the words by Steve Kowit are extraordinarily powerful.
Beautiful.
it's all so true, so true...

I have this fear of dying young, because of a dream I had year sago...It stays in my mind. And even still I forget to drop to the ground and kiss the earth. Even still I get caught up in life. Thanks for this reminder.
I am sorry about your friend. :(
:)
